The house is located in the heart of Sappho’s birthplace, Skala Eressos, attached to the hill of “Mastos”, translated as “Breast*” in English. It is a traditional agricultural property featuring a small house and a large, fertile garden with olive, fig, and pomegranate trees. The garden includes a well and an old oven, and the outdoor facilities are powered by solar energy.
The space is designed to operate year-round. The house will serve as a residency space during the quieter winter months for queer activists, artists, educators, researchers, and further practitioners. During the summer, the expansive garden will host larger collectives for gatherings and events, making it a dynamic site for both research and community throughout the year.
Breast*: We are interested in the fact that the name of the hill – with all its gendered connotations – was silenced in modern times, with it being altered to “Vigla”. We would like to unfold this herstory. However, we want to build on the term “breast” in a trans-inclusive and non-bodyessentialist way.
